Tooth-Friendly Recipe 6: Banana “Ice Cream”

There can be some slight discomfort during that first week of having braces, and some discomfort following adjustments every few weeks. On the way to having a beautiful smile and straight teeth, soups and well-cooked veggies are going to be the safest and easiest foods at mealtimes. Chances are your child is still going to be asking for dessert. Cookies are obviously out of the question! Candy is too hard, sticky, and risky. Ice cream will be the best option. Not only is it soft and unable to damage the brackets, but it’s also cold and will feel soothing on those shifting teeth. Try this sugar-free and dairy-free banana ice cream! Bananas are brimming with calcium and Vitamin D, two nutrients that contribute to strong teeth.

Recipe

Ingredients:

5 ripe bananas
2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. sea salt
13.5 oz. can of full-fat coconut milk

Directions:

Place the can of coconut milk in your refrigerator the night before you make the ice cream. Peel the bananas and chop them into two-inch chunks. Put the banana chunks in a sealed plastic bag or container in the freezer overnight. Once the bananas are frozen and the coconut milk is chilled, place all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend the ingredients until they are combined, and serve. To store the ice cream, place it in a freezer-safe container in your freezer.

Try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or a dollop of creamy peanut butter to switch up the flavor every time you make it. Trust me – your child is going to want this banana ice cream after every visit to the orthodontist. This recipe will yield eight servings. Place the leftovers in the freezer or let your child share his ice cream with the whole family. Enjoy!

Do orthodontic appliances cause pain?

braces painDo orthodontic appliances cause pain?

Many patients first decide to explore orthodontic treatment in a quest for a straighter, whiter smile. This is a great reason to have treatment and also one that really works! But the cosmetic perks of having a course of orthodontic treatment can’t hold a candle to the real lifelong benefit of improved oral health and decreased risk of serious issues like periodontitis and oral cancer.

As it turns out, when you receive high-quality orthodontic care from a highly trained and skilled orthodontist, you get both benefits – guaranteed. So why don’t some people follow through on their initial research? The reason boils down to this: many patients are afraid that orthodontic appliances will hurt. This fear is not limited to kids, tweens and teen patients. Adults are often afraid of this too. In this post, learn the truth about what it feels like to have orthodontic treatment and the many options for comfortable modern care.

Types of Orthodontic Appliances

The days when your only option for orthodontic treatment boiled down to old-style traditional metal braces, complete with clunky accessories, is long gone. Today, patients who opt for braces have a number of sleek, minimally visible and attractive braces that can do a lot more in a lot less time.

Modern Traditional Braces.

Today’s traditional braces come in many styles and colors, including behind-the-teeth braces (sub-lingual braces), ceramic (tooth-color) braces, clear braces and colorful braces accessories. For example, some types of braces today permit extensive customization that includes colorful elastics and ties and uniquely shaped brackets (hearts, stars, and other choices) to personalize your treatment. This can be especially fun for younger patients, who enjoy picking out favorite colors and styles and mixing things up from an adjustment to adjustment.

Invisalign Aligners.

For teens and adult patients who qualify (based on the individual tooth, bite and jaw corrective needs), the Invisalign system of aligners offers a popular alternative to modern traditional braces.

This system uses removable clear aligners (they look similar to mouth guards but much slimmer and sleeker) to invisibly and comfortably move teeth into the optimal position for your overall oral health and smile goals.

There are several attractive perks for choosing the Invisalign system, including the option to remove the aligners for daily oral health (brushing, flossing) and for special events. As well, there is no need to restrict diet choices or activities while treatment continues.

Accelerated Treatment Options.

Both modern traditional braces and Invisalign aligners can deliver better results in less time than the braces of decades past. But there are also additional orthodontic appliances that can further accelerate treatment results and minimize the length of treatment. These include the Herbst Appliance and Acceledent Aura, both of which Nalchajian Orthodontics is proud to offer patients.

So Does Orthodontic Treatment Hurt?

The truth is, most patients will experience a slight amount of discomfort at the time treatment begins. The level of discomfort is similar to what you might feel while breaking in a new pair of shoes or working out to increase your muscle strength.

However, any discomfort that you do feel should quickly resolve as your mouth, teeth and jaw adjusts to the process of orthodontic adjustment itself. If you have a particularly low pain tolerance, there are topical and over-the-counter pain soothers that can help ease any temporary discomfort. As well, there are additional temporary soothers such as oral wax and cotton pads that can alleviate minor discomfort as your mouth adjusts.

Invisalign patients often report very little to no discomfort, since the aligners system can be gentler overall as well as require fewer in-office adjustment visits (which is when the teeth and mouth tissues can often feel a bit tender again).

The key to minimizing any discomfort or tenderness is to select an experienced and skilled orthodontist with extensive expertise in treating different oral health issues in all ages. Minimizing discomfort in a young patient whose teeth and gums are still moving into adult position is an art in itself, and one Dr. Greg and Dr. Nicole are proud to provide!

In the same way, following daily hygiene and care recommendations, including any dietary or activity restrictions and attentive flossing and brushing, can greatly reduce the potential for discomfort while receiving treatment. Healthy teeth, gums, and tissues are far less likely to feel tender during the normal micro-movements required to achieve optimal oral alignment.
