Is it Required that Teeth are Shaved to Correct Crowding with Invisalign?

If you are thinking about Invisalign treatment, whether it is for yourself or your teen, you are probably dealing with an issue that requires the orthodontist to correct crowding. While Invisalign is a wonderful solution for anyone who wants the benefits of braces without the appearance of traditional metal wires and brackets, there is also a down side to Invisalign aligners. In some cases, teeth shaving is the only answer.

FAQ

How does the orthodontist deal with Crowding Issues?

The majority of orthodontic patients are dealing with crowding problems. There simply isn’t enough space in their mouths, resulting in overlapping or crooked teeth. To correct crowding, Clovis Orthodontics will need to find a solution that will create space in the mouth. This can happen in three different ways. Teeth can be removed to make more room for the rest of the teeth to shift into place, the arch can be expanded, or teeth can be shaved to create space. When shaving is performed, only the slightest amount of tooth is actually removed. Otherwise, you will need to think about more extreme methods, such as tooth extraction, to get the same results. Invisalign treatment is attractive, effective, and convenient. Aligners can be removed during sporting events, special occasions, and when eating. It’s an excellent solution for anyone with an active lifestyle, helping them to avoid many problems that can occur with traditional braces. Invisalign aligners make it much easier to keep teeth clean, ensuring healthier teeth as well.

What is the solution?

Choosing to move forward with orthodontics is a major decision. It means making a financial investment and a commitment to yourself that will take a long time to finally see the end results. Whether you opt for Invisalign or another form of orthodontic treatment, it will likely mean at least a year of treatment for most cases. More often, two years can be expected. You need to be satisfied with the alternative that you choose in the end. You also need to understand what will be involved in every step of the way for your treatment plan. If you are completely opposed to teeth shaving, your orthodontist is still going to need to make room. Tooth extraction means saying goodbye to adult teeth forever, while shaving will only remove a portion that is not noticeable in the least. The choice is yours.

What are Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)?

micro_implantsThe process of straightening teeth involves causing or restricting tooth movement, something that’s not always easy to accomplish. Temporary anchorage devices, or TADs, provide orthodontists with an additional means to apply force and resist tooth movement. If you live in the Clovis or Fresno area and are considering Fresno orthodontics to correct dental misalignments, TADs can provide the means to fix moderate to severe problems.

What is orthodontic anchorage?

Sometimes, braces alone are not enough to get teeth into a proper alignment. Orthodontic anchorage is the means by which orthodontists apply force to either move teeth or keep them from moving. In the past, this would often have to be achieved with devices like headgear, which can be cumbersome, unsightly, and even painful when applied. TADs give orthodontists a better means of controlling tooth movement without having to rely on external dental appliances.

What are temporary anchorage devices?

TADs are temporary dental implants that give orthodontists a better option for providing a base to apply traction to teeth. These implants are miniature screws that are inserted into the bone between teeth. TADs allow orthodontists to manipulate individual teeth in a better, faster, more discreet way than ever before. They can help correct gaps in teeth, open bites, tilted molars, and other orthodontic issues.

What should patients know about TADs?

Though TADs are easy from an orthodontist’s perspective, patients may have some valid concerns about these dental implants before they receive them. Fortunately, these implants do not require special care and having them implanted is a low-risk procedure:

The entire procedure is performed in an orthodontist’s office, under a local anesthetic.

After the area is numbed, the titanium-alloy screw is put in place. This is painless, though some patients may feel pressure in the area.

TADs can be repositioned to suit the changing needs of teeth.

The TAD is removed when it is no longer needed, typically after a few months. The area will be numbed with a fast acting topical anesthetic, and the device will be gently unscrewed.

Recovery from both installation and removal is typically uneventful. Patients may wish to use an over-the-counter pain reliever to help cope with any aching in the area, but nothing else is usually necessary.

Daily care of TADs is simple. Patients are usually instructed to clean the area twice daily with a soft bristled toothbrush and a cleaning solution.

If the implant causes any irritation to the cheeks or gums, patients can apply some orthodontic wax to the screw and make an appointment to see their orthodontist.

TADs are a minimally invasive, discreet way for orthodontists to effectively align teeth and correct bite problems without cumbersome headgear. If you are currently considering visiting a Fresno or Clovis orthodontics specialist, contact Dr. Nicole Nalchajian and Dr. Greg Nalchajian today at Nalchajian Orthodontics. They can help start you on the journey to the healthy, beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.

Lately, you’ve noticed that your daughter has grown more and more concerned about her looks. From applying the perfect lip gloss to having the right shoes, she wants to look perfect. While you’re out at the stores shopping for the perfect accessories, don’t forget about the role Fresno Orthodontics has in beauty.

A Rite of Passage

Clovis Orthodontics doesn’t just help your daughter to put on her best smile, but they also work to transform her teeth into ones ready for adulthood. The orthodontists will determine exactly when the braces should be placed on the teeth; however, generally, this does not happen before the adult teeth are in. Otherwise, the teeth wouldn’t be given the chance to grow properly. As your little girl grows into an adult, her teeth can transform with her.

Correcting Various Problems

Making an appointment with the orthodontist is also wise because braces have the opportunity to correct a multitude of issues. For example, some youngsters have teeth that grow in crooked, and braces will set them straight. Others have large gaps in-between their teeth or parts of one tooth that overlap another. These are some of the other issues braces can correct.

Inspiring Confidence

In order for your daughter to feel good about herself, she needs to have some confidence. When she hears smile quotes right now, she may feel as though she can never achieve that level of perfection with her teeth. By obtaining braces and correcting the dental issues she has, she will begin to see how beautiful of a young lady she is and carry that confidence with her through life.

Your daughter doesn’t need all sorts of makeup and hair products to look beautiful. Instead, you need to make an appointment with Nalchajian Orthodontics today to set up an appointment and get started on the path to glamour and confidence.
