Sometimes a tooth needs to be moved in a specific direction, and there is not a suitable tooth available to act as the anchor. Temporary Anchorage Devices, also known as TADs, are very helpful in these instances. They can also be a headgear alternative. At Nalchajian Orthodontics, Drs. Greg and Nicole often use TADs to provide a comfortable treatment experience and the best final result.
Commonly used in conjunction with braces, TADs often reduce overall treatment time by achieving faster tooth movement. TADs are used as a part of several orthodontic treatments, including
- Closure of dental space
- Molar uprighting
How do TADs work?
TADs are a medical-grade titanium screw that is placed directly into your gum and jaw bone and connected to the specific tooth that requires movement. This creates the force that is needed to move the tooth precisely into place. Although TADs are temporary, they are only removable by your orthodontist once your tooth or teeth have shifted into position.
The procedure to place the TAD is minimally invasive. Local anesthesia will be administered to the site where the TAD implant will be placed. This numbs the surrounding gum tissue. Your orthodontist will work quickly and carefully to place the TAD. As the TAD is being placed, you may feel slight pressure, but discomfort or pain should not be felt during this time. Although the patient should not feel the TAD at all after a brief recovery, there may be some initial discomfort during the first day or two after the procedure. An over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen, can help relieve symptoms. If you continue to feel discomfort after this time, please contact our office right away.
