Orthodontic Devices: Bite Plane

Orthodontic Devices: Bite Plane

Orthodontic treatment begins well before braces are out on your teeth. Depending on your unique issues, certain appliances need to be worn first. A bite plane is one of the first appliances our patients will wear.

What is a Bite Plane?

A bite plane is a small orthodontic appliance used when the upper teeth significantly overlap the lower teeth. This appliance helps to “open” the bite. It is worn prior to getting braces to eliminate the risk of bottom brackets popping off during treatment. It also helps prevent damage to the gums in back of your front teeth caused by the lower teeth constantly being in contact with them.

How do I Wear It?

Your bite plane may be removable or fixed into your mouth. If it is removable, it should only be taken out for the purpose of cleaning it. Bite planes must be worn 24 hours a day, especially when eating. This is because most of the correction of the bite is achieved during chewing. If the bite plane is left out longer than it should be, the teeth can move and necessitate the need for a new appliance. This will prolong the entire course of orthodontic treatment. If your bite plane is fixed, or cemented, into your mouth, you should brush it when you brush your teeth.

What to Expect

Most patients report that it feels strange to talk, eat, or swallow with their new appliance. This is because your back teeth will not touch while the appliance is in. You will eat foods with only your front teeth, so it is important to eat slowly and gently. You may notice you are talking strangely when the appliance is first put in, but this will go away after a couple of days. Your teeth may feel sore for the first few days. Tylenol or other over-the-counter medication will help with that. You should avoid chewing gum and other sticky foods when you get your bite plane.
