How Do I Clean My Invisalign?

Invisalign products offer a great alternative to those who are in need of braces or retainers. Their products are just as effective as standard braces and retainers while providing a clean invisible look for patients who wear them. An orthodontist who specializes in Invisalign in Fresno CA will have necessary experience to determine whether or not a teenager or adult is a good candidate for this type of orthodontic technology.

Invisalign FAQ

How to Clean Invisalign Braces?

It is essential for those wearing Invisalign aligners to keep them clean at all times, and to thoroughly clean their teeth before putting them in.  There are a few methods that patients can do themselves to ensure their aligners are clean at all times.

How to Brush Your Invisalign Braces?

Brushing your braces is fairly easy to do. While normal braces can be cleaned while inside your mouth, Invisalign products must be removed according to specific instructions that you received from your orthodontist.

  • Mix cold water and toothpaste
  • Removed the aligner
  • Gently brush the interior and exterior with a toothbrush
(Use same brushing motions for this process as you would when brushing your teeth.)
  • After you’ve finished the brushing process, thoroughly rinse the aligner with cold water
  • Then set it and let it dry completely

Some orthodontists recommend that their patients stay away from using toothpaste when cleaning Invisalign products because small abrasion marks might become visible later on. If this is the case, use a small amount of dish soap and rinse with mouthwash before rinsing the aligner with water.

How to Use a Homemade Soaking Solution

There are a number of homemade solutions that are handmade that will work well when cleaning your aligner:

  • A Hydrogen Peroxide Solution – If you want to remove any type of bacteria, combine hydrogen peroxide with luke warm water and soak your aligner for 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water after the process has been completed.
  • A Vinegar Solution – Vinegar is the best way to remove any tartar buildup on Invisalign products. Combine an equal amount of warm water and white vinegar, and soak your aligner for between 20 and 30 minutes. Next, brush your aligner with a toothbrush and warm water to remove any excess particles or bacteria. Rinse and let the product dry entirely before putting them back in your mouth. While the vinegar smell might be a little hard to bear at first, it will go away soon and you’ll be very happy with how clean your aligner is.

How to Use a Vibrating Retainer Bath

While retainer baths do cost money, they provide an easy way for you to clean your retainer products without all the hassle of making a solution or brushing them yourself.  Using a sonic bath also helps remove excess bacteria and particles that normal brushing can’t reach with a combination of soluble crystals and cleaning solutions.

First, fill the sonic bath with warm water. The instructions on the product you purchase will tell you how much water is needed for each bath cycle.  Next, pour in the required amount of soluble crystals or tablets into the water. Most sonic baths will come with packets that are measured correctly for each bath.  Once the crystals have dissolved, put your retainer in the bath and let it soak for about 15 minutes. During this time, the crystals will do their part by removing any bacteria or particle left inside your Invisalign retainer. Once the bath is complete, remove your aligner and rinse it thoroughly. Make sure to let it dry before placing the retainer back in your mouth.

What About Cleaning Invisalign Products with Water and a Toothbrush

Many orthodontists recommend that their patients use only warm water and a toothbrush to clean their aligner. This is not only because toothpaste often leaves abrasion marks on aligners, but also because other substances, while rare, might affect the actual appearance of the aligner when inside the mouth of a patient. This is not a common occurrence because patients are told to replace their Invisalign products every couple of weeks.

Basic Notes about Cleaning Invisalign Products

In most cases, your orthodontist will give you clear instructions on how to clean your aligner. If you have additional methods that you would like to use for cleaning your retainers that were not given to you by the dentist, ask them if it would be okay to proceed and how each procedure might affect your oral health and the condition of your Invisalign products.

As is the case with general oral health, brushing your teeth on a regular basis is essential to maintaining proper dental hygiene. You should clean your retainer after every meal, once when you wake up and once when you go to bed. When you’re enjoying a meal with your friend or family away from home, make sure to pack a small dental care kit that includes a folded toothbrush, dental floss, a small container of mouthwash and a small tube of toothpaste. This will allow you to keep your retainer clean wherever you go.

After you’ve completed the cleaning process for your Invisalign products, brush your teeth and clean your mouth with mouthwash extensively before putting the retainer back in your mouth. This will ensure that any particles or bacteria are removed from your teeth and won’t affect the cleanliness of your aligner.  Invisalign products are normally prescribed only for patients who are well suited for them by a licensed orthodontist. While the above cleaning suggestions have been found useful by other patients, you should always consult with your orthodontist to ensure that your aligner has been cared for properly.
