Every plain wall deserves a piece of work, so why not cover it with a smile? – Shawn Lukas

We often think of teenagers when we think about crooked teeth, but more and more adults are now seeking treatment to get the straight teeth they have always wanted. An orthodontist has many options to help you achieve the smile of your dreams. Two options for straightening teeth are braces and invisalign. Learn which option is best for you.

Braces

This is the option most of us are familiar with. With this treatment plan, clear or metal brackets and wires are permanently affixed to your teeth for a certain amount of time determined by the severity of your condition. They are adjusted regularly to slowly straighten teeth, and they have been proven effective for many conditions such as crooked teeth, gapped teeth, crossbites, and overbites.

Invisalign

This is a treatment option that uses clear plastic retainers to move teeth. The patient wears the retainers for the majority of the day, removing them to eat and brush. Every two weeks, your orthodontist will provide you a new set of retainers to continue shifting your teeth. This is ideal for patients that have only slightly crooked teeth, a small gap, or minor bite problems.

Which is right for me?

An orthodontist can help you determine which option is best for you. Many patients prefer Invisalign because it is the less noticeable option. They can be removed which makes brushing and flossing easier, but the patient must be diligent in taking care of them. It is also not effective for major corrections. Braces require fewer adjustments, but some patients do not tolerate the hard material very well. Some say it irritates soft tissue and can leave stains on your teeth if you are a smoker of heavy coffee drinker.

Regardless of the option you chose, you don’t have to live with a less than perfect smile. Contact Nalchajian Orthodontics today to discuss treatment.
